The Upholstery Grade score relates to the Martindale Test, also known as the ‘rub test’. This is an internationally recognised standard which measures a fabric’s durability. This test especially relates to upholstery fabrics. The higher the test score, the more durable a fabric is.

As a guide, the following scores, indicate the type of upholstery use:

20,000 – 25,000 General Domestic Use

25,000 – 30,000 Heavy Domestic Use

Over 30,000 Contract Use

The most hard wearing fabric are those with a high Martindale score. This information (where applicable) is listed under the Product Details section for a fabric. The higher the Martindale score, the more durable a fabric is.

FR treatment (fire retardant) will be required if you intend to use our fabric for upholstery. Always check with your upholsterer about what is required, as there are different rules for domestic and commercial projects.

Extra wide fabric are typically double the width of conventional fabrics. This means they are an economical option for large curtains and blinds that require a lot of fabric. Their extra width means fewer joins and therefore less time and effort is required in the making process of larger curtains and blinds compared to conventional width fabrics.

The term ‘railroaded’, means the fabric pattern runs across the width of the fabric from selvedge to selvedge ie the pattern runs sideways rather than running up the roll. These fabrics are also known as a ‘room high’ fabric.

Oilcloth fabric is a cotton fabric, coated with a thin acrylic layer. Oilcloth fabric can be wiped clean and the thin acrylic coating makes the fabric water repellent and prevents most stains from penetrating the fabric. Oilcloth fabrics are typically used as tablecloths due to their wipeable and water repellent qualities.

Wipe clean spillages with a clean damp cloth immediately to reduce the risk of staining. Some substances can penetrate the coating and cause a stain – these include curry, pesto, oil-based products, red wine etc.

In the event of staining, gentle wash at 30 degrees. Do not use fabric conditioner or bleach. Do not spin or tumble dry. Line dry only to lessen or remove the stain. Iron on reverse on medium heat.
