CURTAIN MEASURING GUIDE
WIDTH
We recommend that your curtain pole or track is in place before measuring for curtains. For a curtain track, measure the width from end to end.
For a curtain pole, measure the width between the finials.
If you are fitting a new track or pole, make sure this extends at least 10% of the overall window width on either side of the window to allow the curtains to be stacked back. For example, with a 200cm wide window, the track or pole would be at least 240cm wide (this includes an additional 2 x 20cm (ie 10%) either side of the window).
MEASURING FOR PINCH PLEAT CURTAINS
Pinch Pleat curtains come with a ‘return’ This is simply extra fabric after the last pleat that allows the curtain to bend back to meet the wall.
To measure the required return: On a curtain pole, measure the distance from the hook on the underside of the curtain ring to the wall. On a track, measure the distance from the glider to the wall. Note: The return size is normally between 4cm and 12cm.
For accuracy, please enter measurements up to 1 decimal place.
LENGTH
We recommend that your curtain pole or track is in place before measuring for curtains.
When using a curtain track, measure from the top of the track to where the curtain is to finish.
When using a curtain pole, measure from the underside of the pole ring to where the curtain is to finish.
If you don’t have an existing track or pole in place, we recommend the track or pole is fitted 15cm above the window recess.
Curtains look best when they are hung either to the floor, to a sill (if inside a window recess) or below the sill. We recommend the following:
A. FLOOR LENGTH
For curtains to clear the floor, measure 1cm above the floor. For curtains to brush the floor, measure to the floor.
For a heavier brush, measure to the floor and ADD 3-4cm (tip: you will need less than you think for an effective brush).
B. BELOW THE SILL
Measure 15-20cm below the sill (or 2cm above the radiator).
C. ABOVE THE SILL
Measure 1cm above the sill.
IMPORTANT! Floors and sills are often uneven, so measure in
3 positions across the track or pole (for example, left, middle and right). If you want your curtains to sit above a sill or to clear the floor, use the shortest of these 3 measurements to avoid the curtains dragging.
MEASURING FOR EYELET HEADING STYLE
On an eyelet heading, the top of the curtain sits 3cm above the pole.
Measure your chosen length from the top of the curtain pole and then ADD 3cm to get your overall finished length (note: we do not make this adjustment for you).
MEASURING FOR COTTAGE PLEAT HEADING STYLE
On a cottage pleat heading, the top of the curtain sits either 5 or 7.5cm above the pole or track.
Measure as per Step 1 or 2 above.
Then:
For a 2’” (5cm) ruffle ADD 5cm to get your overall finished length (note: we do not make this adjustment for you).
For a 3” (7.5cm) ruffle ADD 7.5cm to get your overall finished length. (note: we do not make this adjustment for you).
MEASURING FOR FLOP OVER FRILL HEADING STYLE
Measure as per Step 1 or 2 above for your finished length. Also, enter the length of the flop you would like below. We recommend a minimum of 10cm for shorter curtains, up to a maximum of 30cm for longer curtains.
In all heading types, the finished length should represent the very top to the very bottom of the curtains. We will make all necessary seam allowances.
For accuracy, please enter measurements to 1 decimal place.
